Greetings to our music families!!
So, October has gotten away from me… is everyone as crazy busy as I am? Thanks for understanding the late Polar Notes!
We are wrapping up the first quarter of school and finishing up the marching band season. Can you tell that my kid is in marching band? Thankfully, the weather has been fabulous on game days! Now we start gearing up for fall concerts! Check out all the fun things we have going on!
John Wojciechowski Quartet Coming To SCN!!
Wednesday, October 28, 2015
In the 11 years he’s been at St. Charles North High School, Mr. Wojo’s quartet has only played for his students one time. To celebrate the release of their newest CD, the John Wojciechowski Quartet will be playing a special concert to benefit the Friends of Music. Sandwiched between performances at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival and the Green Mill, this unique event will happen on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 in our own SCN auditorium. Please mark your calendars and get your tickets now! Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for students/seniors. CDs will be available for purchase and the Quartet will be available after the show for autographs! We don’t know when Mr. Wojciechowski will bring his quartet back to North, so don’t miss out! Tell your friends (especially if they are alums!) Tickets are available through scnmusic.com. Thanks for supporting the Friends of Music!

Cheesecake and Entertainment Card Sale!
Our annual cheesecake and entertainment card fundraiser is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. Order forms have gone home – hopefully you have seen it!! Ask your child if you haven’t! Order forms are due back to the directors by October 27, along with payment. Entertainment cards can be purchased online through www.cherrydale.com, but cheesecakes have to be ordered with the paper order form. Please check out the forms that were sent home and contact your child’s director if you need another copy. Pick up will be on November 13 from 2:30-6:30 pm at door 17 (around the back, by the music rooms). Thanks for eating some yummy cheesecake to support your kids! It’s a sacrifice!
Download the Cheesecake and Entertainment Card order form here!
Do you have a freshman this year? At the first concert, there will be a short presentation about the music program and Friends of Music at the conclusion of the concert. This is designed to be sure you know the expectations for your child’s group, as well as an introduction to the fabulous things Friends of Music is doing and how to get involved.
SpiritwearMany, many thanks go out to Dee Dee DeCosterd for organizing the spiritwear sales! Dee Dee has been working hard on another set of cool music spiritwear, just in time for Christmas shopping!! So, watch for information about it. We are trying to “go green”, so order forms will be sent home digitally. If you don’t have access to a printer, there will be some forms with the directors. Just ask your child to pick one up. I’ve seen the new ideas and they are really cool!
Vintage spiritwear will be on sale at the Constellation Concerts in December. You can’t beat the prices and everyone needs another “More Cowbell” shirt!! Look for the table in the lobby and stop by. Shirts, magnets, Christmas ornaments, and more! Once it’s gone, it’s gone. So, come by and see what we have that you need!
Veterans Day Celebration Concert
The Veteran’s Day Concert is a fabulous community-wide event that takes place every year on November 11. Our wind ensemble, wind symphony, and varsity bands play a plethora of patriotic tunes for the local veterans and their families. If you haven’t made it to a Veteran’s Day Concert, you need to get your free tickets and come enjoy a great community event!! Check out scnmusic.com to get your free tickets! Yes, they are free, but you still have to have tickets. This event is packed every year, so don’t wait! Do you have a veteran in your family? Bring him/her with you. It’s more than a concert – it’s an awesome event!

Upcoming volunteer opportunities
Just drop a note to the person listed and they can help you get involved!
ILMEA Jazz Festival – Saturday, November 14, 2015
at SCN Music wing. We are hosting the ILMEA Jazz Festival and we need a few parents to help with some pretty easy tasks.
- Picking up and setting up breakfast for the directors.
- Providing some soups/Italian beef, etc. for lunch for the directors.
- Helping with serving lunch.
- Selling and collecting tickets for the concerts at 2:15 and 4:00.
Think about what might be appealing to you. I’m going to try something new – online volunteering!! Once I get it set up, I’ll get an email sent out with the link. You just sign up – and it sends you reminders! Who doesn’t like reminders?? And then just follow through on what you signed up for. Sounds simple, right? So, watch for the email with the link. Maybe it’ll work so well that we can use it for other volunteer opportunities!
Constellation Concert – December 17 at 6pm and 8pm
Jennifer Nemetz, chair (Jennifernemetz@ismie.com or 630-584-0403).
The Constellation Concert (December 17 @ 6 and 8 pm) is the most unique concert you will ever attend. There are approximately 30 groups that perform in 90 minutes and there are 2 concerts in the evening. The curtain goes up on stage for one of the orchestras, then lights go up on the side entryway for a woodwind quartet, then lights go up in back for a percussion piece, then lights go up in the center for a choir piece, then back to the stage, etc. I like to think of it as a concert for people with ADD. A lot is going on in a very short time, with no downtime for set changes!! Obviously, we need a lot of people to keep the kids going in the right direction! If you volunteer to help out for a concert, you will get to have first dibs on your seats for the concert you are attending. I have to say it’s one of the coolest concerts I’ve seen because almost every single music group at North performs! The marching band even has a part!! Come join the fun times! Jennifer will get you set up with a job to do! The more, the merrier. It’s not even hard, just fun!!
Jazz showcase – May 21, 2016 (Note the date – It’s a Saturday this year!)
Linda True, chair.
Silent Auction and Jazz Performance. This massive event is the biggest fundraiser for our music program. All facets of the music department benefit from this fundraiser. Are your kids in music? Then this fundraiser is for your child’s program!
Please consider what you can do to help. This is a huge event that needs LOTS of support. Please, please, please, think about what your strengths are. There are people who would fit into all of the different roles that we have. Please help us be able to host this fabulous event. Without parent support and assistance, we will not have this awesome event and our entire music department will suffer. Please consider volunteering for some piece of this event.
Senior Recognition –
Cathy Schwanebeck email@example.com
Senior recognition is an end-of-year event. Volunteers are needed to pin flowers on the seniors at their final concerts of the year. If you have a senior, this is the perfect volunteer opportunity!! Cathy’s last child is graduating, so we will be looking for someone to take over next year’s ordering of flowers and coordination of “pinners”. Do you have a junior this year? You could work with Cathy this year to learn the ropes and be ready for next year.
If you have an interest in any opportunities listed above, please send a note to the contact person listed or to me (firstname.lastname@example.org). We will get you involved and connected!! Thanks to you, we can have an awesome year!!!
Communication Chair (still) Needed!!
We are in need of a website/communication chair. This person would send out email blasts, update the website and set up ticket sales for our various events. This is a super important job, but not difficult or time consuming. We can show you how to do everything (well, actually Andy Montgomery will)! Please let me know if you have an interest in this!!
You did it!! You made it to the end of this edition of Polar Notes! It’s hard to believe how much stuff we have going on to support all of our music kids. If you need something, just ask any of the board members. We can usually point you in the right direction!!
